About the business

Established in 1872, the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and the oldest animal welfare institution in the country. It is affiliated to the RSPCA, is a member of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and is an Executive member of the National Council of SPCAs South Africa.

The CoGH SPCA, based in Grassy Park in Cape Town, is the only organisation in the Cape Metropole that offers a 24-hour Inspectorate service and although we have specialised inspectors in the Domestic, Wildlife, Horse Care, Farm Animal and Feral Cat units, all operate together as one Inspectorate unit.

Our SPCA’s area of operation covers about 11 000km2 of the Cape Metropole and our priorities are to:-

• Prevent cruelty of domestic animals, wildlife, farm animals and equines;
• Rescue animals from crisis and distress;
• Provide care and shelter for abandoned, stray and surrendered animals;
• Reunite and adopt animals into loving homes with responsible owner;
• Provide primary veterinary healthcare to animals in poor communities, through an efficient mobile clinic service;
• Offer professional veterinary treatment for sick and injured animals, through a large animal hospital, which prioritises those who cannot afford private veterinary care;
• To educate young learners on responsible pet care and the humane treatment of animals;
• To inspire and motivate people to stand up for animals and to give of their time, talents and energy and resources in the name of animal welfare.
